Designed for curious minds ages 5–12, our interactive weekly classes blend outdoor exploration, real-world science, and creative engineering challenges. Whether keeping an Explorer Field Journal or building a custom vehicle for our festive Pumpkin Derby, students will develop critical thinking skills, conduct real experiments, and build lasting confidence. Created and led by veteran educator Deahna Leigh, these student-centered classes provide a creative, testing-free space where children can collaborate and pursue their natural passions. Young Explorers: Nature, Science & History | Ages 5-9

Young Explorers invites children ages 5–9 to discover the world through outdoor adventures, hands-on science, history, and creative problem-solving. Each week, children investigate questions about trees, wildlife, water, rocks, navigation, and how people have used the natural world throughout history. Through nature walks, experiments, building challenges, and creative projects, children learn to observe, wonder, investigate, and explain. They’ll develop curiosity, early scientific thinking, environmental awareness, and confidence in asking questions while keeping their own Explorer Field Journal.

Forces, Motion, & Engineering | Ages 5-9

In this hands-on STEM enrichment course, young engineers will explore what makes objects move, roll, speed up, slow down, and stop. Through playful experiments with ramps, wheels, surfaces, weight, and motion, children will discover concepts like force, gravity, friction, speed, and incline. Each week, they’ll make predictions, test their ideas, observe results, and build simple prototypes. As their understanding grows, students will design and improve their own pumpkin derby vehicles. The course culminates in a festive Pumpkin Derby where children put their engineering skills—and creativity—to the test!

Young Explorers challenges ages 10–12 to become investigators, scientists, historians, and problem-solvers through hands-on outdoor learning. Students explore ecosystems, wildlife, trees, water, geology, navigation, engineering, and how humans have adapted to the natural world. Through field investigations, experiments, mapping, and design challenges, students practice asking questions, forming hypotheses, analyzing evidence, and communicating conclusions. Each student maintains an Explorer Field Journal and develops projects throughout the course, culminating in a Young Explorers Exhibition where they present a discovery or investigation.

Forces, Motion, & Engineering | Ages 10-12

Students will investigate the science behind motion through hands-on experiments exploring force, gravity, incline, speed, friction, weight, and design. They’ll conduct controlled tests, collect and compare data, identify variables, and use evidence to explain why objects move differently. As young engineers, students will apply what they learn to design, build, test, and redesign a pumpkin derby vehicle. Along the way, they’ll practice problem-solving, critical thinking, measurement, and iterative design. The eight-week experience culminates in a Pumpkin Derby where students test their designs and explain the engineering choices behind their creations.
