This class is designed for students with some painting experience who want to sharpen their foundational skills and elevate their work.

On the first day, students should bring new project ideas (with reference material if available) ready to begin. Each week will start with a demonstration and lesson, followed by group discussion which focuses on a different aspect of drawing and painting. Day one, for example, will focus on composition, balance and proportion.

Other topics covered will include choosing media, light and shadow, depth and perspective, color theory, color mixing, using underpaintings or drawings, as well as quick gesture drawing and painting. The rest of the class time each student will get one-on-one feedback while working.

Please bring your own materials, as you may work in the medium of your choice. If you think you need help choosing the best media for your project, don’t buy anything new until after our discussion on day one! All students must start with drawing paper, pencils, charcoal, and both a vinyl and kneaded eraser. Bring 2 examples of your finished earlier work. The goal is to leave after 6 weeks with one to two finished new artworks (depending on your chosen subject and your speed), and several sketches.
