Instructor: Laura Mandile

This class is for new to intermediate watercolor painting students. Using different watercolor techniques, as well as a combination of watercolor and ink sketching, students will have an opportunity to paint flowers, fields of fall foliage, tall grasses, and even fruits and vegetables. We will discuss color mixing, composition,  light and shadow.

Required materials list: (provide upon registration)

  1. A set of 12 decent quality watercolor paints in tubes or pans, (I will explain in class why tubes are preferable, but if you already have a pan set it’s fine). Look for brands like Windsor Newton, Sennelier, Holbein, etc.
  2. A mixing palette with multiple wells (pan sets usually come with one built in).  If purchasing, especially if using tube paints, look for an airtight folding palette.
  3. 5 watercolor brushes.  Sable is great, but synthetics such as taklon are fine.  Some brands to look for are Princeton, Simply Simmons or Royal Langnickel Zen: (2 rounds from 4-12; one large flat or mop, 3/4 to 1” wide for washes; one detail brush such as 000, liner or script; one flat or angled flat, about ¼” wide.
  4. A pad of intermediate student or artist grade watercolor paper, 7×10 to 9×12 (look for Strathmore 300 or 400 series; Canson XL, Arches or Saunders). 140lb minimum weight, cold press. Hot press is also ok, just has a smoother surface.  NO mixed media paper.
  5. Micron waterproof ink pen. One fine line pen (01 to 05) is all you need, but small sets of a variety of line thickness are inexpensive if you like sketching and want to experiment.
  6. Pencil (HB or 2B)
  7. 2 erasers, 1 kneaded and 1 white vinyl
