Ready to get hands-on and learn the timeless skill of sewing? Whether you’re eager to dive into the world of fashion or want to create your own clothes, this class is the perfect place to start! Under the skilled instruction of experienced graphic and textile designer, Christie Swanson, in six short weeks you’ll make your own lined drawstring bag, a zippered pouch, and pajama pants!

*Please bring your own sewing machine (we may have some loaners). Please also come to class knowing how to turn on, thread your machine, and wind the bobbin (we can help a little there too!)

Fundamental skills and techniques will be covered including:

  1. Overview of different types of sewing
  2. Introduction to essential sewing tools and materials
  3. Different types of fabrics and their characteristics (cotton, polyester, denim, etc.)
  4. How to choose appropriate fabric for different projects
  5. Threading a needle and tying knots
  6. Basic stitches (running stitch, backstitch, whipstitch, etc.)
  7. Introduction to the sewing machine (parts and functions)
  8. Practice sewing straight lines and curves on scrap fabrics
  9. Introduction to reading sewing patterns
  10. Basic pattern alterations (lengthening, shortening, adjusting fit)
  11. Proper use and handling of sewing tools and equipment
  12. Safe practices when using sewing machines
