This class is for students with some experience in painting, yet wish to perfect some of those
basic skills that make a good painting even better! Students will bring their own new project
ideas (and reference if you have it) to class the first day, ready to begin. Each week will begin
with a demonstration and lesson followed by group discussion, focusing on a different aspect of
drawing and painting. Day one, for example, will focus on composition, balance and proportion.
Other topics covered will include choosing media, light and shadow, depth and perspective,
color theory, color mixing, using underpaintings or drawings, as well as quick gesture drawing
and painting. The rest of the class time each student will get one-on-one feedback as you work.
Students can work in the media of their choice, and therefore must bring their own materials. If
you think you need help choosing the best media for your project, don’t buy anything new until
after our discussion on day one! All students must start with drawing paper, pencils, charcoal,
and both a vinyl and kneaded eraser. Bring 2 examples of your finished earlier work. The goal is
to leave after 6 weeks with one to two finished new artworks (depending on your chosen subject
and your speed), and several sketches.
